Wow! What a great first series we have had at the Kids Law Podcast!

Alma-Constance and Lucinda have asked some big questions and found out some incredibly interesting things about the Law and how it affects children during the ten episodes of Series 1. We’ve had the honour of hearing from not one but TWO Supreme Court Justices, Lady Hale and Lord Neuberger, both former Presidents of the Supreme Court, who spoke about how the legal justice system works and listens to the voices of children.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Max Hill QC, spoke to Alma-Constance about the original question behind the Kids Law podcast: can you become a criminal at age 10, and what does “age of criminal responsibility” actually mean? Later in the series, this was followed by a conversation with Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Cressida Dick, about the role of the police, and The Secret Barrister about why we need a criminal justice system and what children can do if they are interested in law.

We covered some really important topics, like how children are affected when their parents separate or decide to get a divorce, with family lawyer Charlotte Bradley, and also spoke to MP Edward Timspon about what happens when children are put into foster care. If you feel you need to speak to someone about any of these topics, make sure to talk to an adult you trust like your parents or a teacher.

Alma-Constance also asked guests about what children can and cannot do according to the law: in relation to working and getting paid for it, with Kevin Poulter, and also what things were allowed during the Covid-19 lockdowns, with Adam Wagner. As always – remember to check the latest government and NHS guidance on gov.uk! Our final episode featured a conversation with Darren Jones about his role as MP for Bristol North West, what an MP does for their constituency, and whether he thinks the legal voting age should be lowered from 18 to 16 in England and Wales, like it is in Scotland. Look out for more episodes like this in series 2 as we find out what different types of legal professionals do!

A big big thank you to our guest speakers and to all the children, parents and adults who have listened, shared, and enjoyed each episode! We can’t wait to ask more questions and find out more about the Law in Series 2!
